Our standards

We try to:

use the most precise locality, town, neighbourhood, ward and venue name available;
distinguish Wigan town from Leigh, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Ince-in-Makerfield, Hindley, Atherton, Tyldesley, Golborne, Standish, Orrell and the wider borough;
distinguish Wigan from St Helens, Warrington, Bolton, Manchester, Chorley, West Lancashire, Lancashire and wider Greater Manchester;
identify the exact location of Wigan North Western, Wigan Wallgate, the Brick Community Stadium, Wigan Pier, Royal Albert Edward Infirmary and college campuses;
distinguish ordinary-day travel from matchday, event-day and weekend countryside or canal conditions;
check live information against official or first-party sources;
identify opinion, sponsored content, affiliate content and advertising clearly;
avoid unsupported rankings, stereotypes and claims about communities;
use first-hand experience only where it genuinely happened;
correct material errors promptly;
treat businesses, residents and contributors fairly.

We do not turn Greater Manchester or historic Lancashire into Wigan-only facts. We do not describe Leigh, St Helens, Warrington or Bolton venues as Wigan venues by default. We do not flatten the borough’s towns, villages and former mining communities into one generic local area.
